The inaugural Denver Grand Prix (tel. 888/62-SPEED or 303/405-1111; www.denvergrandprix.com) was held over Labor Day weekend 2002 in the streets surrounding the Pepsi Center (Speer Blvd. and Chopper Circle). The much-hyped event was the first such event in Denver since a previous race lapsed into financial chaos in the early 1990s. General-admission tickets run $25 to $50 per day for adults, less for children; grandstand seats are more expensive.
Colorado National Speedway, at I-25 exit 232, 20 minutes north of Denver (tel. 303/665-4173), has NASCAR Winston Racing and other motor-sports events on a three-eighth-mile asphalt oval track, weekends from April through September.
For drag racing, head to Bandimere Speedway, 3051 S. Rooney Rd., Morrison (tel. 303/697-6001, or 303/697-4870 for a 24-hr. recording), with races scheduled from April through October. There are motorcycles, pickup trucks, street cars, and sports cars, plus car shows, swap meets, special events for high school students, and a junior drag-racing series for ages 8 to 17.
